Tekad Azizulhasni

Hadiah kahwin Azizulhasni

Puas hati raih emas Beijing

MOHD AZIZULHASNI WINS KEIRIN TITLE IN BEIJING

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- National track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang clinched the keirin event at the Beijing UCI Track World Cup Classic, the last leg of the Track Cycling World Cup.

The 22-year-old rider's win helped him redeem himself after failing to win two previous titles at the Track Cycling World Cup circuits in Manchester and Melbourne recently.

Riding with Australian professional outfit Bike Technologies Australia (BTA), Azizul outpaced five other riders, including Maximillian Levy, winner of a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and fellow countryman Josiah Ng.

The win, which gave him 12 points, saw him lead 24 other riders in the rankings and helped him regain his status as the top keirin rider in the world.

Mohd Azizulhasni will now wear the white jersey, accorded to the overall leader, during the March World Track Championships in Denmark.

The Terengganu lad who won a silver medal in the 200m sprint at the World Track Cycling Championships in Poland last year, would certainly regard the win as a pre-wedding gift, since he will be tying the knot next Saturday.

Currently, the rider is pursuing his studies at Deakin University, Australia in Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Sports Management.

His personal best in Track Cycling World Cup 2009-2010 season was winning a silver in keirin during the Melbourne leg last year.

Josiah sekadar mampu menghuni tangga keenam Piala Dunia Klasik

PELUMBA harapan negara, Mohd Azizulhasni Awang menepati sasaran mempertahankan kejuaraan acara keirin Piala Dunia Klasik di Beijing, China, semalam manakala seorang lagi pelumba, Josiah Ng sekadar menghuni tangga keenam.

Azizulhasni juara keirin Piala Dunia

AZIZULHASNI AWANG

KUALA LUMPUR – Hasrat tercapai.

Azizulhasni tawan dunia

AZIZULHASNI menguasai saingan di Beijing.

JAGUH lumba basikal trek negara, Mohd.

The 22-year-old collected sprint silver in Pruszkow last year but in the Laoshan Velodrome, the site of the Olympic track cycling competition in 2008, it was the keirin in which he excelled.

He proved too strong for Australian rivals Jason Niblett and Daniel Ellis, who took silver and bronze respectively.

Awang's victory ensures he shares the overall World Cup series crown with Germany's Maximillian Levy as both cyclists finished with 22 points from the four events.

Elsewhere, the Netherlands' Willy Kanis was in electric form to take the 500m time trial gold ahead of China's Jinjie Gong and Australia's two-time world champion Anna Meares.

The Australian quartet of Luke Durbridge, Michael Hepburn, Leigh Howard and Travis Meyer took victory ahead of the Netherlands and New Zealand in the team pursuit but that was not enough to knock Great Britain, who came within inches of breaking the world record at the Manchester World Cup, off top overall spot.

In the men's one kilometre time trial there was more for the home crowd to shout about as Miao Zhang secured gold, while Canada's Zachary Bell took scratch race gold.

In the women's team sprint, Junhong Lin and Jinjie teamed up to complete a thoroughly impressive home competition for China, while women's points race gold went to Australia's Megan Dunn.

Azizul has World Cup in sight

By LIM TEIK HUAT

SEPANG: A place in the world championships is already guaranteed for Azizul Hasni Awang but the Malaysian track cycling dynamite still has unfinished business to tend to in the fourth and final round of the World Cup in Beijing beginning on Friday.

Azizul will be hoping to become the World Cup overall winner in keirin for the second consecutive season, which comes with the leader’s jersey to be worn at the world championships in Copenhagen in March.

All set: (from left) Azizul Hasni Awang, Mohd Edrus Yunos, Josiah Ng, Hafiz Sufian and Akmal Amrun ready to take part in the World Cup in Beijing which starts on Friday.

Azizul bagged silver ahead of compatriot Josiah Ng as they marked the first time Malaysia had two cyclists making it to the keirin final in the Australian leg of the World Cup in Melbourne last November.

The 10 points he earned in Melbourne put him in fourth position and still very much in contention to top the overall standings.

Azizul, who is riding for Australian trade team Bike Technologies, is trails leader and reigning world champion Maximilian Levy of Germany by five points.

He had a disappointing outing in the opening round in Manchester, suffering first-round elimination, and did not compete in the third leg in Cali last month.

“My mission in Beijing is to top the World Cup overall standings. A podium finish may be good enough to win it, depending on how the others fare,” said Azizul.

“I have been enjoying good form after winning three events at the Tasmanian Carnival during the Christmas period and I hope to carry on with the momentum.

“At least, I do not have to worry about qualifying for the world championships at this point as my ranking points after the silver medal ride in Melbourne should be enough to place me among the top 16.”

Azizul is an automatic qualifier for the individual sprint at the world championships by virtue of winning the Asian Championships gold medal in Indonesia last year.

Making things easier for Azizul is the absence of the British squad, led by triple Olympic champion Chris Hoy. The British riders are skipping the final round as they are in a training camp in Perth to prepare for the world championships.

Azizul, who rode to a historic silver in the sprint in last year’s world championships in Poland, made a brief stopover here on Sunday en route to Beijing.

Also travelling to Beijing were Josiah, Mohd Edrus Yunos, Hafiz Sufian, Akmal Amrun and Fatehah Mustapa.

The 22-year-old Azizul will put his bike and helmet aside after Beijing as he is returning to his hometown in Dungun to perform the akad nikah (marriage contract) with his fiancee, Athiah Ilyana Abdul Samat, on Jan 30.

“It is just the ceremony but marriage will only take place after the Commonwealth Games and Asiad at the end of the year,” he said

Azizulhasni yakin ulangi pencapaian emas keirin Piala Dunia

- Bernama

Wedding bell rings as Azizul reaches final round

By Arnaz M. Khairul

MARRIAGE is on Azizul Hasni Awang's mind as he approaches the final round of the UCI World Cup in Beijing on March 22-24.
A week after he returns from the assignment, the 22-year-old Azizul and fiancee Athiah Ilyana Abdul Samat, 24, will perform their akad nikah on Jan 30.

"We're just performing the akad nikah, but our wedding ceremony will only take place in December, after I'm done with the Commonwealth Games," said Azizul.

Azizul will represent his BT Australia trade team in Beijing, leaving the team sprint duties in the national team to the new combination of Edrus Yunos, Josiah Ng and Hafiz Sufian.

Asked about his focus leading up to the meet, Azizul said he is far from distracted by the proximity of the event to one of the most important days in his life.

"Cycling is cycling and marriage is marriage. We have to have a balance. On the bike, cycling is all that's on my mind. Once I'm done with Beijing, I'll put my focus on personal matters," said Azizul.

Azizul won three events at the Tasmanian Christmas Carnival last month and is on a hot streak of form leading to the Beijing round of the World Cup.

"After the Tasmanian event, I just maintained my form with a lot of ergonomic and strength training in the gym.

"Only this week, we'll be training on the track and then head straight to Beijing," said Azizul.

Azizul, the World No 1 in the keirin the previous season, enters the final round ranked fourth after a slow start to the season.

The World Championships 200m sprint silver medallist is ranked 13th with just the Beijing round and the World Championships in Copenhagen in March remaining on the calendar.

Birthday boy Azizul’s wish is to roar loudly in Tiger year

By LIM TEIK HUAT
PETALING JAYA: The past year was a defining one for track cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang but the birthday boy could take it up to another level if he gets his acts right in the season ahead.
For Azizul, who turned 22 yesterday, his wish is to make his mark in three major assignments this year, which is also the Lunar Year of the Tiger – the world championships in Copenhagen in March, the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi in October and the Asian Games in Guangzhou in November.
Last year saw Azizul winning two World Cup gold medals in the keirin to clinch the overall title for the first time and he also helped Malaysia emerge as the Asian sprint team champions for the first time apart from retaining the individual title.
Eyeing history: Cyclist Azizul Hasni Awang has set his sights on winning medals during his debuts in the Commomwealth and Asian Games this year.
But the most memorable performance was his gutsy ride to take the fight to a powerful Frenchman, Gregory Bauge, before settling for the sprint silver medal in the world championships in Poland in March.
It was not only the country’s highest-ever achievement in track cycling but also the most outstanding for Malaysian sports last year and it puts Azizul as a front-runner for the national Sportsman of the Year award.
“Last year was a wonderful one and I had many good moments. But 2010 is going to be a bigger one for me as I will be taking part in the Commonwealth Games and Asian Games for the first time,” he said in a telephone interview from his training base in Melbourne.
“I hope to win a Commonwealth Games medal as no Malaysian track cyclist has done it before. As for the Asian Games, I will try to win a gold medal. I feel that we have the better opportunities to strike gold in the Asian Games as we are also in with the chance in the team sprint.”
Malaysia have only won four medals in Asian Games cycling. After a gold medal-winning effort in Bangkok in 1970, Malaysia had to wait for 32 years before Josiah Ng ended the medal drought with a silver in keirin in Busan.
Azizul will also be hoping to repeat his feat in this year’s edition of the world championships.
It will be another chance for him to aim for the world title and also to make up for the disappointment in the keirin where a wrong tactical move saw him narrowly missing out on the top six final.
Azizul added that it would be harder to accomplish his missions this year as he had to focus on his studies as well.
“That is something that I have to strike a balance,” said Azizul, who celebrated his birthday not only with his team-mates in Melbourne but also his girlfriend, Athiah Ilyana, who is also studying there.
Azizul’s next competition will be the final round of the World Cup in Beijing from Jan 22-24.
