Mohd Azizulhasni Wins Keirin Title In Beijing

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 23 (Bernama) -- National track cyclist Mohd Azizulhasni Awang clinched the keirin event at the Beijing UCI Track World Cup Classic, the last leg of the Track Cycling World Cup.

The 22-year-old rider's win helped him redeem himself after failing to win two previous titles at the Track Cycling World Cup circuits in Manchester and Melbourne recently.

Riding with Australian professional outfit Bike Technologies Australia (BTA), Azizul outpaced five other riders, including Maximillian Levy, winner of a bronze medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and fellow countryman Josiah Ng.

The win, which gave him 12 points, saw him lead 24 other riders in the rankings and helped him regain his status as the top keirin rider in the world.

Mohd Azizulhasni will now wear the white jersey, accorded to the overall leader, during the March World Track Championships in Denmark.

The Terengganu lad who won a silver medal in the 200m sprint at the World Track Cycling Championships in Poland last year, would certainly regard the win as a pre-wedding gift, since he will be tying the knot next Saturday.

Currently, the rider is pursuing his studies at Deakin University, Australia in Bachelor of Commerce, majoring in Sports Management.

His personal best in Track Cycling World Cup 2009-2010 season was winning a silver in keirin during the Melbourne leg last year.
